Gum Grafting

Gum Grafting in London, ONDr. Nicole Mantha is a periodontist who provides patients with cosmetic gum surgery. Many people do not know they are suffering until their gums start to recede. Sometimes the symptoms come on so slowly and gradually, that they are almost unnoticeable. In fact, most patients do not seek cosmetic gum surgery until the effects of gum recession have become severe. The most noticeable symptoms include sensitivity to extreme temperatures, and teeth that appear “longer” than usual. In such cases, gum grafting, or cosmetic gum surgery can be used to raise the gum line to a more attractive level.

Cosmetic gum surgery involves the grafting of tissue from one area of the mouth onto the receding gum line. There are currently two types of cosmetic gum surgery that are available:

Connective Tissue Gum Grafts – This is the most common form of cosmetic gum surgery. Dr. Mantha will cut a flap of skin from the roof of the mouth and remove a tissue sample from beneath this flap. The tissue is then sewn to the gum line so that the root is covered again. The result is less sensitivity and a more attractive gum line.

Free Gingival Gum Grafts – This is similar to a connective tissue graft, except that, rather than cutting a flap of skin first, the tissue is taken directly from the roof of the mouth. This type of cosmetic gum surgery is used on patients who have naturally thin gums.

Gum recession is often considered to be a serious condition. Aside from the obvious cosmetic concerns, receding gums can leave a tooth vulnerable to bacteria and decay. For this reason, patients should seek cosmetic gum surgery as soon as possible.
